I downloaded a program from what I thought was a trusted site. Once installed it asked for a reboot. The "repair computer" program kicked in and in the end, I needed to reset win 10. That went fine until I found that all most of my desktop items have had their extension changed or removed. Checking io to control panel to remove the program nothing appeared there. Have scanned with mbam and currently checking with superspyware. Any other suggestions, please? Ah, I elected to keep my existing files on reset. Would doing a total reset help?

sounds like you did a refresh.

A refresh is effectively a Windows 10 reset without the wiping of all the data. What this does is create a new installation with your data but can't reload any programs that you had before you refreshed it.

So if you had Microsoft Word on the machine before for example, you would need to reload that. Same for printers, scanners and whatever other peripherials.

Aside from that, you should always use a SandBox to test unknown programs
    In your case; https://www.sandboxie.com/DownloadSandboxie

If you are running Windows 10 Pro, it will have it's own SandBox, if you are running the latest iteration.
