Ex-tenant owes rent and has moved to Denmark

We had a tenant that moved out owing £1675 in unpaid rent. She is now living in Denmark and I have her new address but am struggling to know how to proceed to recover the money. Denmark it seems is the only country in the EU that doesn’t follow the European Order for payment system. I’ve contacted numerous debt collection agencies that have declined to help. I have a signed tenancy agreement and until recently she was conversing by email and doesn’t dispute that she owes the money but has stopped paying it back as agreed. If anyone can advise the process I should follow, I’d happily do it myself.

    Welcome to MSE. :)

I suspect you will need to take legal action in Denmark or instruct a Danish debt collection agency.

Looks like a write off, joys of being a LL, take it on the chin and move on. Your not realistically going to get your money back, if you continue chasing, how much more money and time your going to spend?

    In Denmark?
  • Thanks for your responses, it’s not really about the money it’s the fact that she thinks there is no consequence for her actions. I’d just like it to affect her somehow if only to blacken her credit history so she can’t easily do it again.

Get a CCJ for her in the UK so that she can't rent in the UK if she tries to move back.

I agree with you and also agree with Cakeguts in getting a CCJ against this person so if they ever returned to the UK, renting will be a nightmare.
Who knows we will even have this person asking a question on here.
I keep telling people that life is a circle, the !!!! you do always return to hit you in the face if not sooner, then later in life when you really least expect it.
Make sure you keep all the records and is this person every returns to the UK and wants to clear their record you will have the information to present to them.

If all the landlords who had tenants who left with rent arrears got CCJs against them it would help other landlords to avoid a problem tenant.

If you issue a claim in the UK with the aim of a getting a CCJ can you use a Danish address? If you can I imagine there would be an extra cost involved serving it as you can't rely on 1st class post.
