The poll isn't working for me, but our offer was addressed to me only (female) and not my husband. However, I have a current account with the bank in question, and my husband doesn't, and I'd performed the application online through the Internet banking facility.

edited to add: I've now responded to the poll and to mention that our mortgage is with Halifax.

Interesting. My joint mortgage with halifax was address to us both. However we opened a joint account at the same time.

Every other one has been to both as well, but never with anyone we held accounts with.

All our mortgage stuff from Nationwide arrives in my husband's name. Makes me furious, especially as I did 99% of the work to get the thing. We earn about the same and it's a joint mortgage. My surname also comes first alphabetically (we have different surnames) and yet everything is addressed to him.

Our recent mortgage offers from Halifax and Barclays were addressed to the both of us.

It will be whoever was put first on the application.

My nationwide mortgage stuff is addressed to me not my husband as I was first applicant

  • “Dear Sirs!” Wow but that is kind of shocking. I have had the devil of a time getting the various banks I deal with to change me from Mrs to Ms.

According to Nationwide my broker is responsible for the error and must correct it at source. I don’t get why though, as they’re the ones lending and I we already have our current account with them.

Elsewhere, the implication seems to be that I’d only change my Mrs to a Ms if I was divorcing. The fact that I’m not interested in signalling my marital status to the outside world is lost on almost every person I approach. Though not the DVLA or the passport office, oddly.
  • Thank you very much everyone for your replies.

I raised a complaint with the Nationwide last week and this is so helpful. What I’m keen to work out is if

1.) this is limited to just the Nationwide or if it goes further, and

2.) the mortgage offer being addressed and sent to one person only disproportionately affects women.

I’m getting the impression they really don’t take it very seriously. I mean they’re listening, but very doubtful they can make a full scale change. As you say, mangog it’s very annoying when you as a joint mortgagor are sidelined in this manner. Even more so when you did the bulk of the application work, or as in my case, also insisted on the product when it was more expensive than competitors, because you had faith in the provider.

I want to make a more rigorous complaint, rather than the stressed exhausted one I made last week. As they have clearly never addressed this issue properly, let alone audited to see if it disproportionately affects women, I’m having to ask on here.

So I very much appreciate the responses. Thank you everyone.

Is it the case that the applications ask for a "lead name", and brokers etc are tending to fill these in with the man as the lead name (if only because it's usually "Mr & Mrs" rather than "Mrs & Mr")? Or are the lenders making their own decision about who to address the mail to?

Once the account is up and running, my experience is that statements etc are addressed jointly, so not sure why the application process ought to be any different.
