Hi guys,

Quick question. Is it possible to add myself on a credit card of my family member? I have tried hard to get one and at the moment am getting rejected. This thought never occurred to me before but i read that someone did it for his son on here who had just got out of prison. If its possible for him, is it possible for me? (no CIFAS or criminal record just poor credit for me)

1 - Do all credit card companies offer this service?
2 - Will this be added to my credit file if i am accepted?
3 - will do a credit check on me?

Thanks in advance

I add someone to my credit card and it was the biggest mistake of my life and I will never ever ever do that again.
This person was a good friend and was not able to get a card, decided to help because I remembered when I was down finally, someone helped me, something I have never forgotten.
My credit is excellent, so I was able to receive a reply within a couple of hours. Card was received 5 -7 days.
Everything started off well and let's just say it did not end. Right now I am owed 4095 pounds.
If you are able to receive this card via your family member, please be respectful of what this person is doing for you and ensure that you repay what is owed monthly on time.

    Hi,

Thanks for your reply. Sorry it ended like that for you. What was the process and which card did you add your friend too? I am not intrested in using the card but rather building the credit history on my name and the use of a credit card. I am getting conflicing answers whether it shows up on my file or not

Thanks. It was a lesson well learnt, trust me.
    The card was Barclaycard Platinum,
I had two BP cards, I asked for a credit increase which was given and put her name on that card.
The statement goes to primary card holder. You will need to use the card to bill your credit.
I had a weekly balance reminder sent to my email at the end of every week - something I would suggest the primary card holder do as this will given them an idea of what is spent weekly and they can keep you informed.

Oh ok, So it sounds like you did your friend a favour but took all the risk. As pointed out my only intention is to have a credit card on my credit file, not the actual money. That is really my main point and i am not sure if by adding me, a credit card will show up on my file. I have no intrest in adding myself if i cant get this on my file

    I don't know.
Maybe someone will be able to answer your question.
The risks lies with the primary card holder. I was not prepared to have my credit messed up because of this person's selfish action.
I paid the debt and I was promised that I will be repaid, still waiting.

Why do you specifically need a credit card? You mention a poor credit rating. Having a supplementary card on somebody else's account won't help your credit file, as the risk is with the primary card holder.
If you are still determined to go ahead, then the primary card holder has to contact their card company and request a supplementary card.
As far as I know, all card companies offer supplementary cards.
No, this won't be added to you credit file as the primary card holder is responsible for paying all the debts incurred.
Don't know but don't think a credit check on you because the above reason.

Yes i am trying to sort my credit file out and i dont have a credit card. Been trying to get one but rejected everywhere. Strange as i have phone contracts and cat accounts. I do have active CCJ so maybe thats why.

No other reason then that, wont bother if it does not add to your credit file
  • Much more due diligence required on your side aswell as the other persons side before proceeding ahead with it.

It won't help your credit file, but could bring the one belonging to the other person down. You would need to choose carefully, as some cards expect both holders to be at the same address.

Have you tried the credit-builder cards in your own name, like cap 1 and aqua?
  • Being a supplementary card holder will do nothing for your credit file as the account won’t show on there.
