I've also got an underactive thyroid. GPs are generally useless about this. Mine was and didn't tell me either that it would mean we qualify for free prescriptions. I had to look it up.

We get free prescriptions because we are on meds for life. You need to apply asap. Your GP surgery has the form. Go there and ask. They authorise it and send it off. You need to tick myxoedema (that is, hypothyroidism which needs thyroid hormone replacement). About 4 weeks later, they send you a little card which gives you free prescriptions for five years. It's brilliant. One of the good things about hypothyroidism.

A prescription for thyroxine entitles you to medical exemption certificate which you GP should give you. Once you have sent this in all prescription items are free, regardless of income on benefits

My goddaughter applied for a card a couple of months ago and it arrived in less than two weeks.

Yes, all of your prescriptions will be free once you have your exemption certificate. Make sure that you tick the right box on the back.
  • And if you pay for any scripts while waiting for the card get a receipt and you can claim it back.
