I always keep the pavement and kerb edge clear of weeds and a build up of debris as the council don't do it. I do it because I want it to look neat and tidy. If we all did this the place would look a lot better but very few others bother.

I did the same at my old house weeding for about 3 properties as all our drives converged at the pavement together and while I was there I wanted to keep them all nice - moment I moved out that end of the street looked so rough very quickly. It's a nice area but started to look very run down. Amazing the difference just the weeding and sweeping up the loose gravel makes. If only people took a bit of pride in their surroundings.

Our council create them using leaf blowers to blow their grass cuttings around(Other than making noise I'm not sure what the idea behind this is). They do send a man around the town in a buggy to spray the kerbs once a year but this doesn't seem particularly effective.

You're doing it because someone's littering, not because the council isn't picking it up.

It's actually both. I live in an area of high footfall due to it being the main route to walk to a couple of schools and a major supermarket.
The council said they would litterpick more frequently due to this but have failed to keep to the increased schedule.
Which is why I do complain when they don't do it.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.

Litter-picking and long grass/weeds are different issues.

Here in Devon, litter along busy routes is usually picked, not only because a little just encourages more, but because we rely on holidaymakers to provide much-needed income for local businesses. People won't want to come here if it looks like trash city.

I usually pick up the litter along 250m of the rural road bordering our property. Again, if people see litter, they're more likely to add to it, so it pays in the long run to do a regular patrol every few weeks.

My council (in an urban location in Wales) still sprays weeds on pavements and roadways. They've cut back on cutting verges, with most either being cut annually (like a hay meadow) or when they get so long they block sightlines for drivers.

I think this is the right approach all round, really. More wildflowers for the bees, but leaving weeds to grow along the kerb or between paving slabs would damage the paving and ultimately cost more in repairs.

The council here pressure wash the chewing gum and ground-in fag ash from the pedestrianised areas annually.

  • In my town the gutters aren't being cleared of weeds and as a consequence the drains are getting blocked.

In the last couple of weeks we had a lot of rain so this had contributed to gutters getting clogged up and caused localised flooding in the roads.

Road sweepers used to patrol and clear out guttering but not any more.
