Will the OP have to pay the fare for their car or for a car transporter with their car on it?
Just the car. A French recovery operator will drop the car at the port and an English one will pick it up at the other side.

The helpful ferry crew will probably push it on and off the boat.

I'm pretty sure I read on the terms and conditions of one ferry company that vehicles had to be capable of being driven on and off on under their own power.

A dead car would cause chaos on the tunnel trains.

On the ferries, things may have changed in the 20-odd years since I was involved, but it’s difficult to see how.

It’s a once-in-a-lifetime nightmare for the OP, but it’s all in a day’s work for the ferry company. There must be hundreds of dead cars carried every year.

I don’t know about the tunnel, but I’d imagine they could easily load the dead car on last (or indeed first) and then pull it out at the other end. They do have their own rescue vehicles.

Smile nicely and Brittany Ferries will allow a 'dead' car to be pushed on to the ferry (we helped a 'dead' WWII jeep onto the ferry on it's way to Normandy) :)

In todays world. I doubt that very much. The dead car will need to be on a transporter to board the ferry.

Anyone else had experience of this?

Yes. Pretty much a standard condition in just about every breakdown policy I've ever had in over 40 years. I know that because I always read the T&Cs before buying. Several of them didn't include transport between mainland UK and offshore islands either, although the IOW was often specifically included but no others.
