Switching Energy Supplier with Smart Meter

I've been with SSE for the past year and it's time for me to switch to a better deal. I took up their offer of a (SMETS-2) smart meter, so I'm hoping to get a deal where I can continue using it. Looking at the different offers, most have some sort of statement saying they can't use another company's smart meter. For instance, E.on says
Your smart meter will still work if you join us, but it will act like a standard (‘classic’) meter, which means it’ll lose all smart functionality and you’ll need to send us your meter readings manually.

Should I be able to go to another 'smart meter' energy company, get them to take smart readings automatically and use my smart meter?

    Eventually that is the plan.
But it requires the older meters to have firmware upgrades applied before this becomes a reality.

But in the short term if you want a smart meter you can still use it and switch around as normal but you will have to submit readings manually until the infrastructure catches up.
  • Some of us are eagerly waiting, ( I am ) for the first reports of smart switching actually in operation. The DCC who control this is organised by Capita so it will probably be delayed.
When you switch supplier the meter simply reverts to being a standard normal meter, so no big deal.
Some of the smaller suppliers are using Secure Liberty meters so they may wish to exchange the meter for one of their keyboard type meter , at their cost.

You do wonder if, as part of this shambles, the DCC have had guinea pigs with SMETS2 meters trying to do just that? How else will they test it?

Thanks for all your responses. I was really keen to get a smart meter but there doesn't seem to be much point at the moment if you want to shop around for the best deal. I guess I'm set up for when they do get their act together.
As an aside, I haven't felt the SSE smart display to be very helpful. Even when using the oven and the hob at the same time, the dial was only registering a low values. It has never gone higher than about a third. And... the display needs to be very close to the meter to work so I can't place it where I want.
