It's interesting that many cars now seem to be 1.4l, whereas in the past it seems to me that 1.6l was more common.
Am I imagining this?
Turbo charging means a smaller engine can be used with more power. Current Mercedes 2.0L engines are kicking out more than their 5.0L V8's from 15 years ago.0 -

If you mean a TSi reliability isn't a word which immediately springs to mind.
With about 5 major redesigns in 10-12 years to try and get it right it had more false starts than an amateur 100m sprinter.
I'd avoid any petrol with a turbo if reliability is key.0 -

I think things have moved on since the Renault 5 Gordini.0 -
VW golf or Honda Civic would spring to mind.0

We have a 2002 Renault Megane converible that only comes out for the summer. Has a 1.6 non-turbo engine and goes just fine - plenty of poke.
My regular daily driver has a Fiat 1.4 turbo from 2012. Again loads of poke no problem.
However the other day I had a brand new Ssangyong Tivoli as a courtesy car, with a 1.6 non-turbo engine. I put my foot down to build up speed on a slip road and nothing happened. Nothing at all. The Tivoli is for very sedate drivers only!
From what I can tell the emissions regs over the last 10-15 years have directed manufacturers to produce very efficient engines for cruising at 100km/h 60mph in nice easy conditions, but in non-turbo engines this has come at the expense of any kind of torque.0
