Help needed with kitchen quotes please!

Hey everyone,

We are in the process of changing our kitchen. It is a fairly small u shaped kitchen but we don't have a huge budget. This is the first kitchen we have replaced and obviously we don't want to pay more than we have to if we can help it. We've had a quote from Wren after spending hours in their showroom which came out at £5100, for the kitchen and built in oven, hob and microwave. We have just had a quote from Howdens for basically the same layout which is in total including appliances £1k more than Wren. I have the breakdown of prices from howdens and wondered if this seemed expensive to you guys in the know!!

Did you give the Wren quote to them? They'll match it, straight off. The easiest way to deal with Howdens is to present them with a quote. Build a basket online at DIY Kitchens too.

Are there % discounts listed on that quote?

Thanks so much for your reply. No I didn't give them the actual quote from Wren but I told them we'd been there and he said he'd give a good price as knew we were looking around but from what I can see on the breakdown it doesn't show any discount!! Would it normally mention a discount or would I be able to see from the quote that one has been applied?

I've read a lot about diykitchens but to be honest the thought of doing it all myself scares me but maybe I should give it more thought!

Have you gone through a fitter's account?

The % discount is normally on the right hand side but if you go through someone else you won't see it.

You don't have to do it all yourself but it at least gives you another easy, transparent quote for comparison.

The fitter contacted them on our behalf so I guess it's through him?? Although the howdens guy emailed me the quote directly so I'm not sure. I can't see anything that resembles a discount, I just cut and pasted the quote on here, there doesn't appear to be anything else!
I'll definitely give diykitchens a look!

That's the customers price list, the fitter gets up to 70% off that. The fitter gets two price lists, one to give the customer and one for what they are really paying. Howdens will send you the customers price, they won't send you the fitters.


Has the fitter told you that includes fitting? Still a bit expensive for a small kitchen though.


Ask them to show you the real price they are paying it be about 60% cheaper on average, excluding fitting.


I mean £70 for a fitters manual? Is he a kitchen fitter or a DIY'er who needs a manual?

Thanks for your reply bris. I haven't spoken to my fitter about it as yet, I will hopefully speak to him this evening. I agree it seems a lot and with fitting on top I think we will have to reconsider the idea of a new kitchen for a while!! Hopefully we can get it cheaper! Thanks again.

I don't know if Howdens have stopped showing the discount? A few months ago we got a quote on our builders account and it clearly showed the discount for each item (about 70%). Then just a couple of weeks ago we got a much smaller quote from them for our bathroom on the same builders account, but no discount was listed.

It's on my invoice for tape measures this afternoon.

They produce two types of quote. One is where the account holder doesn't want to share the discount with a client.

Can you get away with just changing the doors and counters.

What are these end panels costing £360? Go to DIY Kitchens and the units are available in a multiple of colours that match the doors doing away for the need for end panels.
