Also, the way the pound is dropping against the euro if they do get chased in the UK the debt could easily double based on exchange rates alone.

Hi, does anybody know if EU tax officials have jurisdiction in the UK. My parents have just sold their house in Portugal have no intention of returning and have decided not to pay the taxes on their property. What is the situation?

Probably best you ignore all the busybody armchair lawyers on here.

Property sale tax evasion is widespread in Portugal mainly because 90% of politicians are completely corrupt and this filters down to the population.
Its a common practice not to pay this tax and very difficult for it to be recovered or enforced by the "authorities". They aren't going to waste time chasing people who aren't even living there.

Of course the irony of replies to this thread prattling on about EU directives about recovering tax being issued from probably the most corrupt institution which has ever existed. Laughable.

Then if they aren't going to chase it, there's nothing to worry about.

The replies so far have looked at "CAN it be chased?" Yes, it can.
"WILL it be chased?" - well, you'll need to ask on a Portuguese property forum for that.

Oh, you should have said up front you had a political point to make.

    Wrong place for that, too.

When you make absurd statements like this, it makes you look like a prat and devalues the serious/sensible point about the practical likelihood of this particular tax being chased which you were trying to make.
