Setting up bank account for child under 1

Hi all,

I've booked an appointment with Natwest.
I want to set up a bank account for my little girl who is 8 months old.

I've gone with Natwest because they had a slot free Saturday and I need to set an account up this weekend before a cheque in her name expires.

I've noticed Natwest says this about child bank accounts:
Hold the account in trust for a child or in the child’s own name if they’re over 7

This account will be "in trust" for the child. Would I be able to cash a cheque that has her name on it? I'm confused because she's under 7 so the account won't be in her name by the looks of it.

Any help would be appreciated.

Kind regards

All "in trust" means is basically you run the account on behalf of the child. So if Auntie Alice sent her a cheque for £30 you should be able to pay it in to that account.

If in doubt confirm it with Natwest when you go on at the weekend.

    Thanks for the reply.

I was just worrying because the cheque expires early next week and I didn't want to waste the one opportunity I had left and not be able to cash the cheque.

Cheques don't expire. Cashing them is at the discretion of the bank.

No guarantee an application in branch on Saturday would generate an account same day anyway.

Obviously check with the bank but I believe child trust accounts can accept cheques in either the child's name or the controlling adult's name.
