I think I've just about got my head around it now - we need to pay on the 1st of the month to cover us for the remaining period up to the 24th of July when we vacate. You mention £680 - would it not be our full rent of £850?

Based on what you said below, if you paid some number of £850 rent payments plus one slightly higher payment, then you should pay one slightly lower payment to make up for it since you're staying for a whole number of months 25th - 24th.

A few months after moving in, we changed our payment date to the 1st of each month, so made one slightly higher rent payment for that single month to cover the difference.

If you pay a full month for 1st July - 31st July then you would have overpaid for 25th - 31st July which the LL should refund with the deposit.

    Sorry for not specifying that.

We're out of a fixed term and are required to give one tenancy period notice.
    because.......?

you have a Statutory Periodic Tenancy or a Contractual Periodic Tenancy?

You may well be right, but it would be a shame to make an assumption and then find you have a CPT and need to give, say, 2 months notice.

But assuming it is 1 month notice as you believe, and you serve notice on/before 24th June, your notice (and tenancy) will expire on 24th July.

So on 1st July you should pay a reduced rent covering 1st July-24th July (you have already pre-paid 25th June - 30th June). So you pay 24 days rent (850/30x24= £680).
