2FA for additional card holders with no mobile signal

Co-op Bank tells me two factor authentication for the main card holder can be via sms or email, but for the additional card holder it can only be by sms. Unfortunately the additional card holder lives in a rural location with no mobile signal. Co-op can't tell me whether this is a Co-op policy or applies to all Visa and Mastercard issuers. Does anyone know? Can we swap to a different card where the additional card holder would be able to receive two factor authentication by email or landline if they have no mobile signal?

You can send text messages to landlines. Should come through as a voice message, so that might work.

I suggested that, but they said they can't do it. I don't know why or whether this is just because the call centre person doesn't really know, but for now it isn't possible.

There are additional FCA regulations coming in that require banks to increase the level of authentication for certain transaction types - but I don't believe they specify the method of authentication used.

Thanks. I think it arises from an EU Directive and will apply to all cards, but, as you say, the method is presumably open to Visa and/or card issuing banks to decide. What I'd like to know is whether any other issuers allow 2FA by email or landline (for example) for additional cardholders?

As you mention main and additional card holders, I assume you are talking about a credit card account. In my rather limited experience with 2FA, you are lucky to have the option of any kind of message for the additional card holder. My two principal credit card providers only send 2FA messages to the main card holder, regardless of which card is being used for the transaction!

As far as I've been able to discover, this is quite typical for credit cards. I'm very interested to find out more, but unfortunately I can't offer you much hope.

Yes, I'm talking about credit card accounts. Which providers are yours - I will make sure to avoid them!

I have found this with Tesco Credit Card. No option to add a different mobile number for the second card holder.
I appreciate the increased security but not being able to use the card is going a bit too far

Just a guess here but might help.

Some credit cards may be able to get their 2FA via their corresponding smartphone app.

Does the additional cardholder have internet access - if so, they can get connectivity on their smartphone via WiFi - I would bet you can (or will be able to) authorise via that.

    eg Barclaycard has an app...

Authorisation via app is possible, but again not for additional card holders (at least with Co-op Bank). Also the app only works on certain phones (android 5.1 and above) so no use for me - I am on android 5.0. The additonal card holder has a compatible phone but can't use it to authenticate! Very frustrating!

    Nationwide and Tesco.

I've also looked into receiving SMS messages via wifi (as mentioned by 18cc). Unfortunately my phone is not compatible with the wifi calling available from my provider (Three), so without changing phone and/or provider I'm stuck!

I might add that I contacted the CC providers who didn't seem at all concerned about this - which I would have thought was an obvious requirement! I'm still wondering what to do.
