Hi,
My partner and I had an offer accepted on a house on the 29th May. Met with mortgage advisor same day so he could start full application. Solicitors instructed and given search fees the following Monday (3rd June).
I recieved the forms for homebuyers survey Wednesday 6th June. Mortgage advisor told me to wait until our lender (Halifax) had gotten references from our employers before sending the forms off and instructing survey.
I emailed our solicitor on Monday 10th June for an update and they said they were waiting on draft contracts from the seller's solicitor.
It is now 18th June and no word from anyone about anything. I emailed my Mortgage advisor for a Halifax update yesterday and no reply yet. I recently read that sometimes sellers wait for a survey to be done before sending draft contracts, which has got me worried that it's my side holding things up!
I don't want the seller losing faith in me as a buyer and pulling out if I happen to be taking too long for whatever reason. The seller is buying a new build as far as I'm aware.
Is there anything I should be doing to speed things up or is it just a painful waiting game for now?

Are you a FTB?
It's all very exciting and you probably can't wait but patience is the name of the game .Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill0 -
Whole process is likely to take 3 months. Patience is the key
I hope the chain is complete...2024 wins: *must start comping again!*0 -
Patience is definitely key here!
I'm also a FTB.. our offer was accepted on 1st March and our solicitor didn't receive the draft contract pack until 16th April...
Keep on at them, don't let your paperwork be put to the bottom of the pile.. that's probably the best lesson I've learnt throughout the entire process.
Good luck0 -
Thank you, yes I am a first time buyer. Thanks for the reassurance, I really am looking forward to getting this house and I'm worried everyday about something going wrong!
How long should I wait before chasing things up?:)0 -
Wow - I'm thinking we must have very fast moving solicitors! We had our offer accepted 8th June, and our solicitors have already received the draft contracts and lease etc!0

Hey elsimsy,
You do! That's really good going, hope it all goes well for you!
@ Evaretsuko - my initial plan was to make contact with our Solicitor once a week, so maybe give that a go? Maybe diarise to chase them every Monday for an update?
I've now resorted to chasing everyone daily as we're almost 16 weeks in - so I guess it's entirely up to you!0 -

Chasing them won't make any difference to the time it takes. 16 weeks is nothing. It can take 6 months or longer.
The last house we bought took 5 months. We were buying a vacant property without needing a mortgage. Houses in chains and with mortgages involved take longer. You can never tell what is going to come up that will slow the sale down.
What you need is patience and it will take as long as it takes.0 -
It is customary for absolutely nothing to happen for weeks after the first flurry. Absolutely nothing .... for weeks. I am now in week 5 of "absolutely nothing happening". Had an offer, their surveyor attended..... then absolutely nothing, zilch. I'm only selling, not buying.
Then, suddenly, you're contacted again .... and it goes quiet again. Then, suddenly it's done, it's on - and it's over before you know it.0 -
Again, on the side of 'patience is key'.
My purchase took 5 months and again, this was for a vacant property. You just don't know what will come up and chasing the solicitors every day/week will only make them less willing to prioritise you.
It's in everyone's interests to get the transaction over the finish line in a timely fashion and hounding people solves nothing. If you had your offer accepted 3 weeks ago, you likely aren't even half way through the process yet. As hard as it is, just wait.Know what you don't0 -

Well we've already hit a snag with the lease, so not all plain sailing even if they are quick!! Thanks though x0
