car audio

i dont have a car stereo at the moment, although the iso fitting is there and speakers are connected.

i have recently bought a 2gb card for my phone. and my phone has an adapter with a 3.5mm jack, so with a male-male 3.5mm cable i could connect my phone to an aux input.

so i could just buy a stereo from halfords or somewhere else with cd , radio and aux input.

however is there a cheaper option? i dont want radio (cant stand it) and i dont use cd's. is there another way to connect my phone to my car speakers? if i'm right i just need a powered amplifier? can i buy one of these with a aux input , that connects to the car speakers?

TBH, no. By the time you've bought an amplifier and had the associated installation done, you'd have paid out more.

And don't forget, come resale time, the buyer will expect a CD/Radio.
  • Alternatively, get a radio/cassette unit for the car, these are quite cheap nowadays especially 2nd hand. Also get a cassette adapter that will let you connect your phone. If you don't know what these are click me this one is the first i came across, not the cheapest.

Halfords aren't cheap in general. I really wouldn't recommend the cassette adaptor route as it will really impact on quality. Goto Halfords if you need it fitted, otherwise go online or to eBay to get some really cheap stuff. All you're looking for is something with 'line in' at the front. People may also describe it as iPod compatible. Just in case you think it's any more useful, you can get car stereos that will take memory cards, but I'd imagine you'd find that more hassle than just plugging the phone in.

  • thanks for replies. memory card slot sounds interesting as its cable-less. my card can be removed without switching off the phone so that could be an option. agree about cassette, i reckon the audio quality would be affected. i'll have a look for a stereo with either line in or card slot. dont some have usb sockets?

If your phone has Bluetooth, car CD players such as the Sony BTC2500 (£80-ish new from Ebay) will stream music off a bluetooth equipped phone that supports Music streaming such as most Sony Ericcson k7xx and k8xx series.
