None of this makes sense, I'm with Adrian in post #5, you cannot tax a car unless you are the keeper, otherwise you are taxing it in the name of the current keeper and they get any refund not you.

Sounds like the dealer has just taken your money to me, either they applied for tax and change of ownership in your name, they taxed it in the previous keeper's name, or they pocketed your money. Only in the first case will you ever see any refund.

Apparently, cars that are supposed to be "in trade" sometimes get taxed by monthly DD in the previous keeper's name so they can be run around without trade plates and don't add another keeper.
I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....

No unfortunately I returned all paper work with the car. The dealer could do it but has left me to sort the dvla out, says it’s my problem. The fact I wasted 2 days and £30 on diesel essentially on a car that they may or may not have realised had a fault on the clutch, you’d think they would have sorted the ved refund for me.

I’m going to word a strong complaint to the dvla see who’s cage I can rattle.

Might also leave a balanced but not glowing review of the dealer.

So when you bought it you didn't get the green new keepers slip? Mistake 1

You handed it back to the dealer when you returned it - Mistake 2

I assume you got a full refund though, so all your out of pocket is £30 diesel and £30 for the VED?

I wouldn't waste any more time on this.

the dealer, if id kept the car would have changed the owner, I had all the relevant paper work given to me.

yes I got a full refund on the cost of the car.

my point is that to drive a car off a dealers forecourt it has to be taxed. I had this conversation with the DVLA. so essentially you have to tax the car before its officially in your name. hence the GOV loophole that allows them to keep your money.

this is chicken and egg with the loss being dumped on the poor guy who has had enough trouble with the car let alone having to then fight the DVLA. im sure if I hadn't taxed the car and waited until I was on the owner register that plenty of penalty notices would have fallen on my mat.

I don't see the fact its only £30 makes much difference. I only earn about £10p/h. so essentially ive had to work for nothing for 3 hrs. we get screwed enough by the GOV as it is. why VED cant be added to fuel I don't know. it would end VED avoidance and possibly reduce carbon emissions as people think more about there journeys.

Ok so when you drove the car off the forecourt, was it taxed or not?

You are responsible to tax it, if the dealer used your debit card to tax it for you then they would of had to use the reference number on the green new keepers slip. The vehicle doesn't have to be in your name when you tax it this way.

The proof of registered keeper would be your written name and address on the green slip while you wait for the full V5 to get sent off by the supplying dealer to the DVLA. Admittedly I have never filled this in when I have bought cars in the past, but I have always kept it until the new V5 is delivered.

So what happened here, either the dealer used the reference number on the front of the V5 or he used the one on the green slip. If they had done this correctly then you would of had the VED on day 1. If you where to of say sorned it a day later then your refund would likely be £27.50 as you will auto lose that month's tax. As you handed back the green slip when you returned the car then most likely the car was never officially in your name, as the dealer probably didn't send off the V5.

As you have not got the green slip the DVLA are saying you need to pay for the V5 @ £25 - so you would be chasing £2.50. But as technically this car was never registered to you, you will unlikely be issued a V5.

Hence way the DVLA need you to write in and explain what has happened and hopefully they will give you a refund for all of the VED or maybe less 1 one month.

They are not going to add VED to fuel, you may of been out of pocket even more if they have as you had already put in fuel, which you left with the dealer when you returned the car.

The fact that it is £30 makes all the difference so I would let it go....if it was a v8 Range Rover then maybe not as their VED is like £500.

Yes - and you tax it on the V5C/2 doc ref as the new keeper.

When the vendor completes their details, then you ARE the new keeper. And the refund would come to you. There's zero reason for the vendor not to do that instantly, online.

Well I’m guessing they didn’t as if they had the dvla would be able to refund me.

Ive put in a complaint to the dvla.

No your right I’m not getting my £30 back. Even if I play the dvla’s game I’ll only get about £4 back.

Shame you didn't keep the green slip and you would of not had to pay the £25.

    Lesson well learned.
