Building Insurance - Lintels

We bought our house back in 1997, it is a 1960s end of terrace. Over this time we have found that the previous occupier has made many diy improvements throughout the property most of which done to a poor standard.
Recently we have had problems with our sliding patio doors, they have been stiff and gaps have been noticeable. We thought that we would probably better replace these and got a couple of reputable companies to call round and quote for the job. During an inspection the representative told us that there was no lintel above the doors, that the wall had dropped and that we should keep the doors closed until this was fixed. To say it was a shock is an understatement. I am now wondering about the windows throughout as these are clearly replacement ones.
I wondered if these problems would be covered on our building insurance, especially given the structural damage and the risk for further problems? Has anyone had similar problems and any advice?
Thanks in advance

Poor workmanship will be excluded on your home insurance.

Did you have a survey when your bought the property?
  • If I remember correctly we just had the basic survey for the mortgage.

See if it mentions anything relevant to the current problem.

If so you may be able to turn your sights on the surveyor

But as already advised poor workmanship isn't covered by home insurance
