    As it happens, I've never been asked to show ID when collecting from a RM depot. All I've needed is the missed delivery card. Even when collecting parcels addressed to my wife or daughters.

    For clarity, I am male. I know I mentioned "wife" before, but that cannot specifically identify my gender. (LGBTQ etc. box ticked) :D

    I could send you to an office where staff have been assaulted,threated and recently one OPG had a PDA thrown at them.
    The reason?they ask for ID as is policy.
    now you can see why some staff get to a point of being lax. though one incident like the OP usually focuses the issue.

    100% has a recording CCTV system, I personally saw it in action when I was working there as a Christmas casual a number of years ago, plus a friend of mine had a problem with a parcel collected by her ex and he was caught and police involved through the CCTV, that was only 6 months ago so even if they've had upgrades it's still running.

    I just assumed is was common in all the collection offices, I still know a number of posties in other local offices so I'll ask around to see if theirs have CCTV or not

    Nah. perhaps a nigh issue/crime office.
    Even in very large uints.

    It's not a high crime area and just speaking to a relative who still works there he said they are also a low complaints office, with complaints miscollections so low that they haven't even got the computerised parcel management system installed (can't remember what he said it was called, something like SCS) and they do it all manually. He said at least the two nearest offices also have CCTV and one a bit further away but they are the only ones he's covered at so doesn't know about the rest of the offices in the area.

    He's genuinely baffled that there are offices without any CCTV.

    I guess it's worth OP still asking about their local office if some do have it and others don't, they may get lucky and be one with it and have the collector caught on camera. I doubt they'd just show it to the public though so may need police to view it if it exists.

    I have been in probably 50+ DOs and never seen any CCTV. Large units have cameras on the floor but they dont record.

    I wonder if you could actually make a Subject Access Request for the CCTV from the store on the date of pickup (if you have the time that's better).

    Just provide them with a copy of the invoice and the RM tracking number to show that you bought the item...

    The only snag is, if you didn't pick the item up, it is TECHNICALLY not your information to receive. But if they are lax with their GDPR requests you may get a copy which shows WHO picked it up.

    That being said, I WOULD NOT recommend that course of action because it:

    1. Could have legal implications

    2. Won't help you resolve the case (going to the retailer is the correct way).

    You could actually potentially report house 60 to the police. THE POLICE could, in theory, check the CCTV of the shop and determine who took the item. But, then again, I would not rely on the shop's slip of the tongue as evidence that number 60 is a possible thief, and so would not want to make fairly baseless accusations without anything else.

    I feel that I've just wrote a fairly large post and helped in no way whatsoever :o
