Should I take payment protection insurance?

My partner is employed with UK public service and is going on sabbatical for an year to home country in Asia. She may or may not come back after one year.
I was working in private sector and had to stop working due to kid's health and planning to start working in couple of months.
We have not taken payment protection insurance yet. My partner is currently the main bread winner and it may continue to be so. We don't have a mortgage yet and if and when my partner comes back to this country we may have to buy a house. My partner will pick a job in home country after moving in there and I also may join her once they feel they are settled down well.
I would appreciate any suggestion regarding if I should PPI now in my partner's name, what type of PPI, and any other points I should watch out for.

If you have concerns over income stability, then you should look at income protection policies.0

chances are you won't be able to get PPI type cover if your partner isn't working in the UK. The exception to this is sometimes for armed forces personnel who have a BFPO address.1
