Travel Insurance for 16 year old

Hi. I'm just after some advice. I'm looking for travel insurance for my 16 year old son who is going to Canada for 55 days to visit family/friends. A lot of companies say he needs to be 18 and the companies that will insurance are quoting around £90+ Is this price normal or can anyone recommend anywhere else. TIA

    I suspect that the ones that are charging £90 are simply selling you a family policy, with yourself as the adult. The sixteen year old can travel independently on the policy, but has to be dropped off and picked up by a responsible adult of at least eighteen

    For instance an Annual Multi-trip policy from InsureandGo covering up to ninety days per trip, will cover both yourself and your son for £83.99

    Just an example. Perhaps there are cheaper options.

    Here, for example, is a Annual Multi-trip quote from InsureandGo direct, for yourself and the sixteen year old;
    £83.99

    Of course double check the conditions for a child travelling alone.
    You might find what looks like a similar policy on comparison websites, but double check whatever alternative you find for the conditions if a child can travel independently.

    Asda will have a similar policy for less, but the children have to travel with the adult named on the policy. So of no use to you.

    Not sure. Perhaps you can buy for them, but it's more expensive than the above anyway.
    Confirm that you are a UK resident, and that you are over the age of 18

    You can book direct here; https://www.multitrip.com Choose One Year Multi-trip Premier for just one sixteen year old, as it offers trips up to 60 days at a time.
    But once again, do call and check the conditions for a sixteen year old travelling alone.
    Some family policies may limit independent trips to school trips or similar. But since this will be a policy for just the sixteen year old, those restrictions may not be in place. But check and double check.
  • Thanks for all your help. Haven't been able to find one for £50 so I'll follow the link.

    Thank you! that is REALLY useful. I was looking for something like that, we are taking a 16 year old friend of one of our kids on holiday with us and not bothered about the extras but really essential to get medical cover, this is about £15. Perfect!
    European for 3 weeks in August, the rest of the year only British and proud.

    Please do call or write to them to double check that they will be covered for all of the circumstances of your travel.
    It's worth taking that bit of extra time for the peace of mind of all.
