Fit kitchen first -then floor tiles after?

  • I am a kitchen designer and run a kitchen studio. I also project manage my fitting teams. Two trains of thought on tiling floors before or after. Before, no probs with freestanding appliances, you will also have spares under units should you damage a main floor tile, pricy though.
after is cheaper but will need plinths cutting down. It is best to raise the kitchen unit higher by the thickness of the tiles and adhesive, as the optimum height from finished floor level to top of worktop is 910mm.

If you do decide to tile afterwards don't do what the first owners of my daughter's flat did.........they tiled up to the plinth, grouted it all in etc, made it very difficult when we needed to get behind the plinth to mop up a flood!
Luckily we found some matching tiles and were able to sort it.

And they did the same in the bathroom!

And as kitchen buff said, raise the units a bit, that way appliances will still fit under the worktop easily.
