paying off mortgage. Do I need a solicitor?

I am now in a position to pay off the mortgage on my house. Do I need to hire a solicitor or is this something I can do myself? Specifically, in order to get the lenders name taken off the deeds to the property.

    No you do not need a solicitor it's standard practice for the mortgage co to manage this.

    Lender will deal with the legal aspects. Once the debt is fully discharged. The mortgage on the property being in their name.

    Paying off the mortgage doesn't require any legal involvement, you can do that by making the bank transfer.

    Removing the charge from your title is a separate process - the above answers are I think correct if the property is in England or Wales, it's not quite as straightforward if you're talking about Scotland or I think Northern Ireland. In any event it's not something you actually need to sort out until such time as you sell or remortgage, though advisable to tidy it up sooner rather than later.

    I would deal with removal of the charge now, but if you don't then at least make sure you have a mortgage discharge letter and keep it safe.
    Lenders can change, move on and after so many years may no longer keep records.
