burning dvds????problems

hi, ive never burned movies to dvd before so went to get some recordable dvds on saturday, I didnt know the differance between +R and -R so bought both. Ive tried both and both work on my laptop and pc dvd players but neither work on either of my dvd players or my dads dvd player. My problem is Im going to america on wednesday (for thanksgiving) and wanted to supprise my girlfriends dad with "planes trains and automobiles" its his favorite movie and anyone who has seen it will understand the relevance of thanksgiving and the movie,,,,anyway,,if the movie works on my laptop dvd player will it work on an american dvd player. By the way, dont know if it makes any differance but my laptop came from the usa, is this why the dvds wont work on a uk player??????

    Hi
The 'movies' that you've burned to DVD, are they actual DVDs that you have copied/backed up or are they just files such as avi files that you've copied from your computer hard drive?

WHy not just buy him a copy of the film instead of giving him a dodgy, well illegal, copy?

How did you create the DVDs? What software did you use?
It's my problem, it's my problem

not enough time to find and buy , its 1986 film so its not going to be readily available and even if i could find it im not sure a uk dvd is compatable with a usa dvd player, its not a gift, just thought it would be cool to watch with a few beers

    OK
Somebody beat me to it, but this is my reply.
Those type of files are really meant to be viewed on a PC, not a stand-alone DVD player.
Some of those files though, if they're encoded with DIVX codec, will play in some modern stand-alone DVD players.
To be sure that it will play in all stand-alone players you need to 'author' the file into DVD format.
It's not so easy to get your head round in time for thanksgiving.
But if you take that disc it will probably play in your relative's PC.

Try DVDFlick, it will convert an AVI into a DVD that can be played on a stand alone DVD player. You certainly don't need to pay for conversion software.

Have a look at www.videohelp.com or www.doom9.org for all you ever need to know about ripping and burning DVDs.

BTW you can buy the film for $10.99 on amazon.com, so you could order it to be delivered to him. Or I'm sure if you walked into a US shop you'd be able to get it and you'd be guaranteed it would work.

No need to pay out any money. The easiest solution is to download Nero 8 and use Nero Vision 5 from the suite of tools to create your DVD. From the StartSmart interface, choose Create/Edit > DVD Video > Add Video Files.

It' a fifteen day trial version. The result will not be region coded so will work anywhere.

When installing the program, de-select all options.
