Neighbour taking all the parking spaces on the street?

Sorry if this post doesnt belong here, but I did not know where else I could ask this. I moved into a house 2 years ago and the street is very narrow, everyone parks their cars on the kerb as noone has driveways. My partner has been driving for just over a year now and we have noticed that one of our neighbours takes up nearly half the streets room for parking. He has a large tractor which he parks outside his house (residential street), and he has 3-5 trailers parked in the street at any given time. Its gotten to the point now where we return from work and we cannot get parked near our house as he is taking up roughly 6 parking spots with his trailers and tractor. I have no idea what to do! Can ayone please give me advice on this situation. TIA x

If it's legal for him to park those items in a residential street, then that's just life and the way it goes. Your only chance would be to investigate if those items are legally to be kept on the road overnight and take it down that route. e.g. large lorries need an Operator's License and within that they declare where they will park their lorries overnight (off the road/in a yard). So define what the vehicles actually are, then research for the specific ruling/laws that might apply to those and see if any are breaking any laws.

But, if it's the street and everything's legally parked, there's nothing you can do about it if they get there first (and they will).

I don't know anything about the lagalities of parking, but it doesn't sound right to me that someone can store agricultural machinery on a public road.

I get that the tractor will be taxed, but the trailers aren't. Might be worth researching into whether he can store a bunch of trailers on the road.

    Not a particularly practical solution.

I don't see why it's impractical. If you want to own a car, you need somewhere to park it when not in use. And the only way to guarantee somewhere is to have a private parking space.

Surely moving is better than falling out with the neighbour by trying to force him to move some of his vehicles. And even if the OP succeeds in this, the spaces will just be filled by someone else.

There's a thread on here almost every week about people struggling to park their cars outside their house, and for that reason alone I wouldn't even consider moving anywhere with on-street parking only. It's a an absolute dealbreaker.

if the tractor is run on red diesel then it should not be used for commuting. You could contact HMRC re this. Unless the property is a registered agricultural business then using red diesel will be a no no.

Sure you do. Ask him not to do it. Simples!
  • When you say a "tractor" I presume you mean an agricultural vehicle and not a HGV tractor unit? And the trailers are farm trailers, not ones to be hitched to a HGV cab?

I'm struggling to see why a farm worker would bring a tractor and trailer home with them (#6 - although I can see reporting them to HMRC might not cultivate good neighbourly relations!).

We have "ordinary" parking problems on our street, but everybody behaves reasonably. Your neighbour doesn't sound reasonable, but perhaps they've always done it and don't appreciate its inconvenience for others.

Have you enquired of the council?

I imagine with a username Skintgal, moving house may not be practical (or even practicable).

Self-employed contractor. He may require an O licence and yard, but I don't think it's as clearcut as for LGVs...

'A trailer must be lit at night if it is parked on a road and comply with the other parking rules - the nearside must face the pavement so the rear lights are at the rear for approaching traffic'

I disagree. There is a reason why there is a premium for properties with private parking. Properties with no private parking have no rights on their title deeds to expect any parking in front of their property. It’s a tough one to swallow I appreciate.

I see similarities here with a situation I had which was my property was near a train station where I worked shifts and came back late morning and would never find parking as the road was full from 7am to 6pm. The difference is in my case lots of rail way users were causing an issue whilst here its just one resident.

We ended up moving and benefiting from private parking.
