Nissan clutch lasted 5000 miles

I bought a new Nissan X-Trail a few months ago so that I could have a reliable car with a long warranty and peace of mind. After only 5000 easy non-urban miles, my clutch and flywheel had to be replaced, and Nissan refused to accept any liability. Can this reasonably be considered as "wear and tear"? Have other Nissan owners had similar problems with low-mileage clutch problems? Has anyone had a similar claim accepted under Warranty?

Presumably they checked the reason for failure when they changed it.

I had the clutch replaced on my Volvo at 5 years old and 30k miles. When they dismantled it they said it was hardly worn so was a manufacturing fault and paid 90% goodwill.

I guess they would be less generous of it was obviously worn.

Phone Nissan GB Customer Services on 03301 230444 and complain. Ask them to investigate and raise a case.

It's possible to wear out a clutch in 5000 miles if you drive badly enough. But how does a flywheel wear out that quickly, unless there's something wrong with it?
    If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.

Continue to drive once the clutch friction plate's very badly worn. Same as continuing to drive once brake pads are very badly worn will kill the discs in short order.
  • The clutch in our Mondeo went after just under 55k and our garage (whom I trust) were surprised it failed so quickly. It was badly worn and they suggested (nicely) we were perhaps a bit" heavy" on it.

The car has Hill Start Assist, and I have wondered if that might put extra stress on the clutch(?). But the garage thought not.

Thanks - but I've already exhausted that option. They've eventually offered to pay for the parts, but not the labour, which is over £500. Wholly unsatisfactory.

Hi, I am in the same predicament - bought a 2017 Nissan Qashqai D Connecta at the end of March this year from a Nissan dealership (21987 miles on it.) Previously to this I had a 2008 Qashqai Tekna, which I had driven for over 8 years with no issue. As I was changing jobs I felt it was time to change to a car higher up the years to avoid future problems getting to and from work.

At the end of August and after having the car only 5 months the car was revving sporadically and gear changes were not smooth. I managed to drive to the nearest Nissan dealership available where they determined a clutch and flywheel replacement was required at a cost to me of £900. They explained that the clutch is a wear and tear issue and not covered under their warranty terms. I had to pay as I needed the car for work but have since taken it up with Nissan UK as I feel sorely disappointed that a car barely 2 years old, already has performance and reliability issues that will not be covered under warranty.

I could understand if I was riding the clutch and driving around town, but I have been driving motorway miles to and from work, and for 12 weeks out of the past 5 months the car has been parked up at the airport as I was training on the mainland. I have only driven the car 5000 miles; to say I am gutted is an understatement. Nissan UK whilst sympathetic would not bend on the issue; however it has left a bad taste in my mouth and I will not be buying Nissan again, in fact I will now look to change the car in the very near future as I have lost all confidence in it.

I am not technical nor mechanically minded but when I have googled I have found other drivers have had the same experience and the flywheel may be to blame as it is a dual mass flywheel, but I have not yet found anyone who has been successful with getting Nissan to accept any liability.
  • Hi there,
I am having the samw issue with my vauxhall mokka. I have under 5000 miles and still under warranty. I got it serviced less than 10 months ago. No issues found but all of sudden clutch has failed. Vauhxall is trying to charge me £1600 for it.

  • Feeling very smug about being on my first clutch at 107k miles.

are you in the vauxhall membership scheme, gives you i think its 25% off all parts & repairs thats not on there  fixed price list
if i was you i`d go and look up a local garage and get a price off them i inc tell them you want genuine parts, and they will still be a hell of a lot cheaper , my garage i take my car to for outside warranty repairs allow me to take my own parts in so no markup prices
