Unable to pay deposit in full what can i do?

    Contact them, explain change in circumstances and see if you can agree a payment plan?

    Did you take out travel insurance when you first booked the holiday?

    If so, What relation is the person whose terminally ill, and were they diagnosed before you booked?
    How's it going, AKA, Nutwatch? - 12 month spends to date = 3.24% of current retirement "pot" (as at end December 2025)

    contact them. Explain your change of circumstances and offer them a tenner a month take it or leave it.

    I disagree - just cancel the holiday - pay the rest of the deposit in instalments - if you agree a repayment plan with the agent they won't take you to court.
    Now if you have travel insurance see if you can make a claim.

    As the person states they are being switched to UC, I think it's safe to say their circumstances have changed. If you'd have read the post correctly instead of seeing 'Universal Credit' and 'holiday' before seeing red, you might have worked that one out.

    Ignore the snarky responses from some on here OP - the usual reaction we have become used to reading on here I'm afraid.

    If you have travel insurance then this may cover what you have paid so far if a close relative is terminally ill.

    Are you still planning to take the holiday? Or do you just want to walk away and pay no more? I think the best thing you can do is call them up and explain your situation and see if they are willing to help.

    There is an increasing problem with low deposits, used by agents to encourage business when customers aren't booking, and 2019 has not been a good year for many. When you book, you agree that you will pay the rest of the full deposit even if you cancel, which is what is intended here. However agents are seeing a higher level of cancellations this year and tour operators are insisting the agents pay them the full deposit, hence the threats of legal action.

    The old saying of 'you can't get blood from a stone' remains true and if you talk to the agency they may well agree to accept weekly or monthly payments, after all, they would like you to go and book again when circumstances permit. If they were to take legal action, the court would allow you to pay in instalments anyway.

    As regards insurance, unfortunately, those that only pay £1 or £50 deposit rarely have the money for insurance either and whilst redundancy would be covered, a reduction in hours is not. If you have insurance look and see if the terminal illness of the relative is covered, the fact that you didn't mention it at first suggests they may a relative who is not included in the policy, but best of luck on all fronts
