Best tyres for wet grip to stop car slipping

Sorry OP you must be driving too fast for the conditions. Many many years ago when cash was tight I'd wear my tyres to the legal limit, and never ever had problems driving in the wet.
Apart from one time in the mid eighties when I borrowed my brother's MG Metro (remember those). Entered a roundabout at about 30 mph, the speed limit, in heavy rain. Took the first exit and next thing I knew I was doing a lovely impression of an ice skater and ended up nose down in a 10 foot deep drainage ditch. By sheer luck, as I was thinking, how on earth do I get it out, a road work crew came over with their JCB and pulled me out. The only damage was some foliage in the grille and a massive dent in my ego.
A year or so later I saw a Watchdog type show which highlighted the Metro had problems going round left hand corners. At a certain speed the fuel could flood out of the filler cap and cover the rear wheels causing loss of grip. I'm pretty sure I'm not imaging the article I can't find anything on the internet to confirm my memory apart from a comment on Wikipedia saying in 1989 the car was given a raised fuel filler cap.
While the generic Metro may well have had sufficient body roll to cause fuel spill on cornering, I think it is less likely that this would have been a problem with the MG variant. Certainly the one I had was fitted with a rear anti-roll bar and up-rated shock absorbers which kept it very flat through corners.0 -
Nothing to do with bodyroll - centrifugal force applies to liquids, y'know. While the generic Metro may well have had sufficient body roll to cause fuel spill on cornering, I think it is less likely that this would have been a problem with the MG variant. With all due respect, you are going too fast for the conditions of the road, the ability of your car, or the available driving skill otherwise you wouldn't slide around in the wet.
** Patronising comment warning** This is where the friction provided does not meet the level of friction required.
This is caused by one of many things, such as (but not limited to); Tyres, shocks, bushes etc or quality of road surface/foreign contaminants.
Anyhoo, in summary change ya crappy tyres and spend a few more quid and the benefits will speak for themselves.:beer:Life isn't about the number of breaths we take, but the moments that take our breath away. Like choking....0 -
Uniroyal Rainsport 3's
Michelin Pilot Sport 4's
As has been said. Don't scrimp and save on tyres. Also slow down a bit.0 -
I can sympathise with the OP at one point I went for cheap ditch finders and spun twice on roundabouts, was the first and last time I bought budget tyres the road holding was appalling and they seemed to last forever.0

Did anyone see the first Porsche race at Croft at the weekend? Dan Harper took the last bend in the lead & decided to be flash & do a power slide into the finishing straight. Except he spun it & very nearly reversed into the armco, recovering just in time to get across the line in first place.Tall, dark & handsome. Well two out of three ain't bad.0
