Hi, need a little help regarding tv boxes and options. Partner is not well and does like his TV. We are currently with Virgin and have the TiVo. It’s getting quite expensive and I’m going to try And haggle. What I need to know is are there any other tv boxes out there that work similar, record , pause live tv etc. Not wanting Sky bad past experience, Thanks

I was fed up with the big boys so I just bought a second hand BT youview box off ebay for £30 it does everything I need - not as good as a Virgin box but fine for me. You just need a good ariel and wi-fi - currently I pay £20 per month on talk-talk wi fi only.0

Find out the cheapest offer Sky are giving now, call Virgin to cancel, telling them you are going with Sky as they're offering £x, and see what they offer you. I've done this for the last three years for my sister, and she's still with Virgin on a decent deal.
But her fall back, like yours should be, is to buy a YouView box, connect to an aerial, and you can record, pause, etc, whatever you want."There are not enough superlatives in the English language to describe a 'Princess Coronation' locomotive in full cry. We shall never see their like again". O S Nock0 -
Boxes
The key is what channels you actually must have .0 -
yeah it's all about the channels you watch.
if you only watch freeview and have an arial you could buy a humax for about £200. They are called PVRs
Record 2 things, pause live etc0 -

Snap! Have Amazon Prime too and job done!0 -
Check what options your TV has might have record if you stick a disc on it.
I find that with catchup/streaming I record a lot less.
tends to be
Stuff that won't get onto catchup if I remember.
A series we may want to binge watch and the early episode may drop off catchup.
HD programs that won't be available on catchup in HD.
Amazon&|netflix&|NowTV are a reasonable combo with free to air options through streaming or aerial.0 -
We dont have movies or sport, do have HD channels, but not really bothered about that. Will look into all your suggestions, Thank You0

If its only the terrestrial channels you watch then any box will suffice
I dumped sky years back ( they still mail shot me with offers) and bought a Humax box which has the Freestat channels. My tv has the Freeview channels and the BBC Iplayer so there is more then enough content for the initial one off payment of the box ( plus monthly broad band costs). Iplayer has some really good boxsets to binge on as does ALL4
I do subscribe to Prime as well, sometimes I take the free Netflix trial - usually over Christmas and the Newyear to get to see something different
TBH PrimeTV isn't really necessary for me, I rarely watch enough on there to pay for it as a stand alone, I just watch the free content it offers as part of my Prime package0
