Santander blocked salary deposit

Please help!
I have been paid today by my long term employer into my Santander current account that I’ve had for years and Santander are holding the payment while they ‘investigate’ the transaction.
Is this legal?
I’m so angry and inconvenienced by this, thru aren’t giving me a date for when it will be released or what they are investigating.

    Banks can and do hold payments for "security checks" but suddenly to raise a query about a regular salary payment seems odd.

    It’s almost double usual as I’ve been paid a bonus. Same time every year though.

    I wonder if your employer made a data entry error and payed you significantly more?

    Of course its legal.

    Dont you have other money in the account for you to use ?

    Its always a good idea to have a secondary account to use in situations like this.
