Weird stuff going on with IE6 browser

Hi,I am running XP sp2a, with regular updates switched on and IE6 (I didn't install 7 as its my Mum's PC and she couldn't get on with it so I had to deinstall). The PC has 1Gb RAM and is a P4 200Mhz with 26Gb free. I have been away for a week or so and during that time, McAfee Securitycentre expired, which was a relief because it was a pain in the a*** and caused the machine to run really slow so I wanted to switch product anyway.Mum had mentioned that she was having problems with the internet so when I checked it out today, many popular sites are not displaying such as hotmail and even the router's own config site. I checked the restricted sites settings and they are not in there. The popup blocker is switched off temporarily (in case this might have been causing an issue) but no difference. The sites are being found and IE says it has loaded the page, the windows program bar displays the site name, and the task bar declares done, but nothing appears. Other weird stuff that is going on is (for example) I can't use smilies on this site and when I went to deinstall mcafee, the deinstall dialog box was not displaying any items.I have followed the malware instructions on here and also installed comodo firewall, avg and spybot. I have also done scans using superantispyware adaware and ccleaner but none found much of note. One thing that Mum did admit to doing is installing roboform onto the machine (aargh!) bit annoying as I told her not to install stuff without checking first but the competition mag she gets has recommended it. I have deinstalled roboform now before doing the above scans but I am wondering whether this could have caused any problems?Any ideas of what else I can look for or whether I can reload IE6?Thanks

try disabling comodo for a second while you confirm if it's that blocking accessEx forum ambassador

I have to say, the uninstaller program wasn't functioning correctly (the cynic in me says that its because the subscription has expired and it makes it harder to deinstall). I ended up deleting the files and removing all references in the registry.
I will check this out though Browntoa, as well as your other suggestion ref comodo (although it was happening before I installed comodo)
I will post up the results in a day or so as I have had to leave the PC and will be working away for a couple of days.
thanks very much

Although I doubt IE is the route of your problems, it's more likely to be a firewall or connection issue, once it's up and running you should upgrade to IE 7 from:

Have tried this, but my Mum got in a real state because she didn't like it!

OK latest update on the drama.
I have run:
ccleaner, spybot search and destroy, super antispyware, ad-aware se - all in safe mode and nothing came up.
I had updated comodo, avg and super antispyware to ensure I had the latest versions, still nothing to note.
I installed Windows defender, updated the product and ran a scan.
I have run registry cleaner as Browntoa suggested. 879 errors detected, 57 were fixed by the trial version of the product.
I ran the scan in hijack this and the results are as follows:

Although I can view the web pages, I cannot run the scans on pandasoftware.com or housecall.trendmicro.com as per the malware posting.
I also cannot view the microsoft update web site, nor log into hotmail.
Just an aside, when I save my message on my home PC in MSE, all the formatting goes including line returns!!
Why do I feel that this is something surprisingly simple? Gut instinct I think.
Any other ideas guys??
Thanks to MSE, I am mortgage free!

Upgraded to IE 7 but nothing appears to have changed. Go into www.hotmail.com and the login screen goes to appear but screen remains blank and the status bar pronounces "done". As mentioned, it is not even restricted to this one web site, the microsoft update site won't load either. Other sites demonstrate issues such as Download buttons being disabled. My offline router ip site does not display either. Even runonce screen after installing IE7 was blank!
Have also deinstalled MSN search bar add-on and Yahoo search bar add-on.

I've got exactly the same problem - see my thread:- http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=603625&highlight=blankSome days you're the bird......and some days you're the statue :cool:0 -
Way too much junk on that computer. Looks as if you've downloaded and installed every gadget and toolbar that you could find.
I would be sorely tempted to back up and do a clean install.
You can definitely remove this...: O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Eac_Download] C:\Program Files\Common Files\eAcceleration\download.exe -k0
