Card Fraud - how long until it is sorted

Hope someone can help me and that I have posted this on the correct board.

I had a fraudulent transaction on my Tesco Matercard on the 30th Oct for £911 to
LINK NETWORK LTD NEONO INTERNET ,
GBR EH11 4GA0

I spoke to Tesco/RBS and they were really nice and helpful. I did the forms and they have credited me the money while they investigate. The letter explains this but it also says I might have to pay the money if they cannot resolve it.

How long until I know the outcome? Had anyone had this problem? First time it has happened to me and it was when I had a replacement card issued as I "lost" the first one. It was done on the new card but I have not got any other details.

Hope someone can help

I had several fraudulent transactions on my Tesco Visa card and filled in the form and have never heard anything since (that was January). Replacement card issued and life as normal!
  • Exactly this happened to me, I also filled the declaration in, sent it off and that was the end of the matter!

I think they just have to say this, in case it turns out they find evidence it really was you, just to cover themselves.

  • I had a prob with Amex, some big charges were made on USA websites and these were refunded immediately, got a letter a few weeks later saying all was fine.
There were also several small charges £15-20 pounds to supposedly a hotel in Livingstone, a town I have never been to. They investigated, said these were chip and pin so obviously I had compromised the security of my pin number so they couldn't refund them!
Now I had (and still have) the old card in my posession at all times, I have never written down or told someone the pin. How can someone do chip and pin without the card?
If the whole card has been copied somehow surely that would include the pin?
I didn't challenge it at the time as I had a new baby and was too, too busy/distracted but it still makes me cross 1 year later....my fault I know.
    Too late to complain?

    Shona,

Your Card Issuer has been very naughty.

The Banking Code article 12.12 states: Unless we can show that you have acted fraudulently or without reasonable care, your liability for the misuse of your card will be limited as follows:
If someone else uses your card, before you tell us it has been lost or stolen or that someone else knows your PIN, the most you will have to pay is £50.

So I’d go back to your card issuer and ask them to show you have acted without reasonable care (with your card and/or PIN).

As far as credit cards are concerned, if you never use them for cash withdrawals, get yourself Chip & Signature Cards, and then you can never, ever be held liable for alleged PIN misuse.

It's probably a local retailer, but processing their payments through another address. I've recently had a transaction to a convenience store in Oxford come up as being in Birmingham on my statement, and one of my customers had a petrol station in Oxfordshire come up as being in Basildon! If it's chip and PIN and you've still got the card then it must have been you making the transactions, the chip on a card can't be cloned.

Just ask your card issuer for Chip & Signature Cards. You may find some call centre or banks staff tell you there's no such beastie as a Chip & Signature Card. They'll say something like they are all Chip & PIN now. If this happens ask to speak to a supervisor or ask them to check. Be polite and persistent.

    Thanks for the info James,
PBA, it was the fact it was coming up with the name of a hotel in Livingstone and when i googled the hotel name nothing came up except some old phone nos. When I tried them nothing came through. Is that right that a chip on a card can't be cloned? I may write to AMEX and say the card is still in my possession and ask their opinion. It had been cancelled after I reported the first internet charges in dollars anyway.
I had a few scary moments with mothercare before the baby was born as the charges came up 'childrens world' somewhere in england.... luckily I had the mothercare receits and could match the dates and amounts.
    Ta again
