16m2 Paving Slabs - Overlay with new slabs

We have a shared path which is need of replacing.
Apparently the cost of disposal of the old 'council' slabs would be very expensive so the contractor has quoted £500 to lay new paving stones over the top. The area in question is 16 square metres.
Any thoughts on whether this is a good price?

I would be very very wary of a contractor that wants to lay over the top of existing. As they have not lifted them they cannot tell what quality of base there is to lay on, so quality is a major issue.
I would get another couple of quotes - The price seems quite good, but I am worried that they are not going to do that job well?0 -
16m2 of Slabs is not a huge amount. You could over the course of a few weeks take them to the local tip yourself in the back of your car.
How much did the person who quoted say it wold cost if you wanted the slabs removed? Those who risk nothing, Do nothing, achieve nothing, become nothingMFW #63 £0/£5000 -
They haven't provided a quote to do the job properly (removing old slabs), although I have now gone back to my neighbour (whose builder provided the quote) to see how much this would cost.
Looking on google this morning a small skip is only £70 (plus the price of a permit I guess) and I can't imagine it would take more than a couple of hours extra labour to lift and load the slabs, but we will see what they come back with.
I've also asked for a quote for the same work from a landscape gardening company for comparison (along with quotes for some garden work). Will post here when received in case they are of interest.
The suggestion of getting rid of the slabs ourselves at the tip sounds feasible, although a quick google suggests each one weighs nearly 80kg!0 -

They are 2ft slabs? they will be thicker than the usual ones so heavy but I would be surprised if they are 80kg!!:eek:Those who risk nothing, Do nothing, achieve nothing, become nothingMFW #63 £0/£5000 -
Standard 600 x 600 slabs should weigh around 30 -40kg each depending on thickness.
Thick old council ones 3'x2', probably weighed 80 kgs. Had some myself, few tradesmen wouldnt touch them (H&S).
Might be an idea to just get one up and see how heavy they are.0 -
I thought they are worth money in good nick, anyway they look fine to me just power wash them, If you go on top of them the level will be off and the would be a step or lip.0

freecycle, ebay.....
Stuff like that goes.
They don't look that bad.
A good clean and new grout will probably look even better0
