Is the Tv bigger than the last, how many watts, same for the pump?

Are the pumps on rcd breakers? I had a sump pump with a broken wire costing a fortune once, lucky to be alive really!

We’ve always had the tv on pretty much all the time as we listen to the radio through it so I doubt it’s that.

I’ve asked ovo to send out a IHD. When we got the smart meter we were given the choice of IHD Or see instant usage on line. We went on line but the. Ovo disabled that a year or so ago when their systems couldn’t deal with it.

Everything was consistent so we never really bothered. We can see historical usage and usage in 30 minute chunks but not instantaneous to try to analyse individual devices.

Prior to tuis, back ground usage of pond, hot tub, etc was 11p per minute I’d expect that now to be 12-13p per minute - we can establish that whilst we’re aaay.

That's around a kWh per minute????

    11p a minute is unfeasibly high = 6.60/hour = £57,816 a year.

Even 11p an hour = £963.60 a year. is an awful lot of leccy if you have gas central heating, about three times what mostt people would use. Even we use less (around 7000kwh/year) and we have electric central heating

Perhaps you need to monitor it a bit more closely to see whats using it all, turn some stuff off and get yourself onto a decent tariff to reduce your costs.

  • Sorry - it was 11p per day back ground usage.

I've worked out the old TV cost us 4.44 per day and the new one 9.20 so whilst that accounts for some - its certainly not the £50 quid increase.

It was a sudden jump end of march/beginning of april - I've put our usage into a spreadsheet over the last four years

I willl update as I get more facts in the hope anyone can have brain wave. Next update will be on our return from holiday when I know true back ground usage.

    As per your post #4

"DH has been home all day as he's been off sick where as last year he was in work"

That's your answer - as others have said - more TV, more meals, more cups of tea -- it all adds up

The TV alone accounts for about 10% of the increase.

Still interested in the pond pump specification and on time.

even a cheap and cheerful pond pump will consume around 25-30 watts. Something a bit more meaty would be 50 plus.

50watts for 24hrs is 1.2kwh x 365 = 438kwh. At 13p/kwh = £57 a year so it's worthwhile checking how much each item uses. Putting them on a timeswitch and only running them for 12 hours a day instead of 24 would halve their consumption

We were horrified when we found tha tthe transformers for our electrically operated recliner chairs took a continuous 15watts each even when the chair wasn't operating.
