Eon v20 fixed - £450 debt

Hi all,
As a first time home buyer, I looked around on saving websites and found that Eon offered v20 fixed £40 per month for 2 years which was the best deal I could find.
I phoned Eon up and started the contract and provided my meter readings. This was in October 2018. I have had the direct debit for £40 taken from my bank account every month. I have not been contacted to provide meter readings throughout this period.
I have received a letter from Eon stating that they are increasing my direct debit to £59 per month. I called last night to provide my meter readings in the hope that it would help to stabilize my payments. However, upon providing my readings, I were told that I have a balance of £430 to pay and through providing my meter readings my direct debit would increase to £169 per month. Eon have told me that £40 has been estimated for the duration of time that I have been living in the property and by providing the readings it has confirmed that it is actually £169 per month worth of energy I am using. I find this very hard to understand as there is just myself and my partner who live in a two bedroom house and we work full time.
I can appreciate that monthly payments can fluctuate, however, why have I not been contacted before hand that my balance was stood at £430, and why have my direct debits not been increased before now.
Could somebody please advise what I should do in this situation as a first time home owner I have never experienced this before.
Thank you.

Your meters will tell you exactly how much energy you are using. Without giving them regularly your supplier is only making a guess.
What should you do ? You need to take control of the situation and supply meter reads at least monthly. Have you looked at your use to try and figure it out ?0 -
Are you sure that EON have the correct opening meter reads from when you moved in ??0

That's only £710 (what you've paid plus the debt amount) for 7-8 month's worth of gas & electric, not too shabby at all...as others have said, without meter readings it's only ever going to be a guess.........Gettin' There, Wherever There is......
I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple0 -
Morning firsttimesaver and welcome to the forum.
As brewerdave says, check the meter reads used to start your account from are the ones that you provided.
Your bills will have shown an E next to the meter read and this means we've estimated.
I would advise you to set up an online account, that way you can pop regular reads on and produce real time bills or balances. It'll help you keep on top of your account and take control.
You can speak to us about the balance and discuss the possibility of spreading the balance over a slightly longer period of time.
Or you could pay the balance and set the Direct Debit to cover your usage.
The more accurate reads we have, the easier it is to calculate the payment amount, as it builds up a picture of your usage.
If you need any more help, please just ask.
Thank you

firstimesaver - are you talking Gas and Electric ?
Do get into the habit of reading your meters at least monthly - submitting them online to your supplier - and checking your online bills.
What readings do Eon actually have ? Can you post what you have just given them (and the Oct 18 ones). Some of the modern meters are difficult to read - what button to press, decimal points; some of the old dial ones are often misread as well.Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill0
