Help reordering photos in file - Win 7

I have a collection of photos (.jpg) received from several people at a recent event, all placed in the same file, each set having their own file names. I'd like to reorder them so that they integrate into the correct time sequence. These will then be uploaded to a website.

In the past when using Win XP I was able to drag and drop them to get the time sequence that I wanted and then rename the files sequentially as appropriate.

Can anyone advise how to do this in Win 7 as when I try to drag and drop although I can click and drag, the photos don't drop into the place I want?

Hope you can understand what I'm trying to achieve, any help appreciated.

In Windows Explorer turn on the column for date taken. Then sort the photos in the order they were taken according to their time stamps in the Exif metadata by clicking on the column header. Then rename them.

    Or

Use some software that can batch rename based on timestamp order.

Unfortunately the people taking the photos (five different sources) all had the wrong date/time set on their cameras/phones!
  • After some research on the internet I've found a solution to my problem here. Hope that this helps anyone else with the same issue.

A more robust solution would be to fix the timestamp data in the photos. Here's a guide on how to do that to a batch of photos

You didn't read post 2 which said to do that and post 3 which stated that wasn't possible due to camera clock errors.

Post #2 didn't say to edit the EXIF data but to use it.

Post #5 is addressing the issue described in post #3. ;)

OK, Done that. Camera clock offset errors can be tricky to work out if there is no obvious reference captured somewhere on every camera.

But the OP already knows the correct sequence so can work out the offset.

Yes you could work out a rough time offset for each camera and then change the EXIF timestamps for the images from each camera to get the order correct.

But if you know the rough sequence is is probably maybe quicker just to use appropriate software to drag the images into the order you want and get it to rename the images based on that order, especially if such software is already installed or easily found.
