  • Thank you I will complain. The service was really poor.
  • To posters on here I did say don't shoot the messenger!

I see that natwestmember did not contradict what I said though.

you can apply for a current account on line, if you are not suitable for the Full account it will give you a step account
  • I opened an account with Clydesdale Bank in Scotland, Yorkshire Bank in England and had absolutely no problem and like you came out with the account numbers in my hand.

Excellent customer service and although a basic account I have never been spoken to like 'riff raff'.

The same thing happened to me.I already had a joint current account with Natwest and wanted a step account for budgeting, so applied online.
When the paperwork came through I had a query so phoned the customer services, and the man I spoke to kept telling me I wanted a full current account not a step account.I insisted I knew what I wanted, and he kept saying I should take an account with a chequebook and overdraft.
I said I wanted Step, and he said he would sort it for me.
I've only just discovered that the account I have been using for 3 months isn't a step, but a full account afterall, so he deliberately went against what I said!
Unfortunately I have no idea of when the phone call took place, so I can't prove he has done this.
  • I must admit the customer service in Yorkshire Bank was excellent they really really were.
  • TO sare, it may be possible to find out why it was a current account but you can complain too and get the current account closed and a STEP account opened. I refer you to customer relations as well.

ejones----I cannot correct you because I believe the advice you have given and do give is accurate with regards to what is happening on the ground.
I have yet to doubt the correctness of your knowledge either.
I have not worked for NatWest Bank since February 2009

    I agree with you.
Unfortunately I live in the real world and have a family to maintain and mortgage to repay.
I do as I am told - basically weed out the riff raff and concentrate on the better accounts.

Hmmm NatWest were a bit slow when I applied for a new account so my step account is basically lying unused.
Any bank whose staff thinks I'm riff-raff because I want a Step account can stuff their account so I'll be closing it and quoting the above post to explain why.
Describing any customer or prospective customer as riff-raff when representing yourself as an employee of a business is gross misconduct not to mention bloody rude !

I agree with what ejones999 posted, it does appear some were not prepared for the frankness of the language used! Banks are businesses and as such are obviously much more interested in accounts from which they can potentially profit. Cashiers are not particularly interested in basic accounts because there is nothing in it for the company and therefore nothing in it for them.

I do think it would make sense for banks to foster good relationships with basic account holders because they could potentially be profitable customers in the future.

Unfortunately in this world of commission driven sales this kind of attitude will always be common.
