Ignoring texts / emails re smart meters

I’ve been on various smart meter tariffs the last couple of years, variously with eon, British Gas and latterly edf
All of them stated smart meter as a requirement , we will contact you to install
With all of them I’ve just ignored the texts and emails about arranging an installation - just don’t see the point at all and think it’s total bs they save energy (how exactly?)
Plus I don’t want the hassle and disruption of tradesman faffing in my House
Just wondering if anyone has ever had an issue from ignoring requests to get one installed - as in ever been kicked off a tariff etc ?
Also can anyone give any reason of the benefits of having one ?

Yes - you won't get texts/emails asking you to have them installedNever pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill0

And you are likley to be removed from the tarrif if they notice enough ignoring and actually bother to do it. (that's what happen when you do not hold up your part of what yopu agree too).0

Keep on ignoring them (of course, there's no reason on earth why an energy supplier needs your phone number in the first place). I'm with EDF on a similar arrangement. When I signed up, the EDF online chat person told me I didn't have to have a smart meter if I didn't want one - we'll see. I will also keep ignoring them.0 -
Yes I've had the same with suppliers suggesting on a regular basis I NEED?? a 'not so smart meter' haha, not a lot you can do apart from firmly tell them your not interested and can they remove you from their calling list.
That usually solves the mither until of course you change supplier then it starts again haha.0 -
If you are on a smart meter tariff and don t follow the T and C s required you will be removed from that tariff and moved onto a standard/variable tariff.
If you don`t want a smart meter then do not agree to a smart meter tariff.
You will have to accept a meter fitter "faffing " lol, in your property whether you like it or not if you want to continue to receive piped gas and electricity.
Suppliers have to update meters occasionally be they smart or dumb. If you refuse this then you may be disconnected.
Facts of Life..The customer is not king of his castle unless he/she lives off grid0 -

Plenty of threads on this board already discussing smart metering and MSEers varying views.
Did you try the search function?
https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/search.php
It's really good
As others have stated, if you sign up to a tariff that specifically requires you to have or agree to have a smart meter, and then refuse, expect to be turfed off that tariff when this comes to light.
If you don't want a smart meter, don't pick a tariff that specifically expects you to have one - plenty to choose from0 -
Thanks for pointer towards search function; I searched 'smart meters' ( https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/search.php?searchid=189456960 ) and while presented with alot of information was not able to find anything that answered my question - can you help with how I can use the search function more effectively?
I would still appreciate the views of anyone replying to this thread on how a smart meter helped them save energy - i know that turning off lights and closing the fridge will help (as I frequently have to remind the kids) - but what does a smart meter tell me that i don't already know?
Ref the various replies regards the T&C's ; yes I appreciate a supplier has the right to kick someone off a tarriff for refusing a smart meter but so far this has not happened to me and I was wondering if anyone has been kicked off?
The energy companies themselves seem pretty indifferent to having them installed - a periodic email from edf is all i get. British gas sent a letter I think, Eon was a couple of texts - I think they realise that if they kick up a stink about installing a meter someone like me will just supplier hop again and they would sooner retain the business
Interestingly while edf have sent a couple of emails there is nothing on the 'my account' / 'my messages' online account - i expect the emails are actually coming from a 3rd party installer rather than edf directLeft is never right but I always am.0 -
heres the content of the edf email:
Book your smart meter installation today
Your Easy Online tariff^ includes a smart meter - but you still haven’t claimed yours. To benefit from low fixed prices and have full control of managing your account online - make sure you book your smart meter installation appointment today.
Simply click the link below to choose a time that suits you.
Appointment availability can change daily and we have a limited number for each area. If there isn’t a time to suit you, keep checking the availability online.
Why wait? Act now.
• View your usage – on your in-home display, so you can see what you're spending in pounds and pence
• End hassle – your meter sends us readings automatically, so you don't have to*
• Receive accurate bills – based on the exact energy you use
^Easy Online is a tariff backed with a smart meter. If you don’t book your appointment and complete your meter installation in accordance with its terms, we may end this contract on 30 days’ notice and transfer you onto Deemed contract terms and prices (which are typically more expensive). Smart meters are subject to availability and eligibility criteria set out in the T&Cs. Customers unable to book a smart meter installation appointment due to either installer availability or a complex meter type will not be removed from the tariff.
*Very rarely, your smart meter may be unable to send us an automated meter reading due to connectivity loss. If this happens we’ll try to contact you for a manual meter reading. If we don’t manage to get it from you, we’ll send you an estimated bill.
Please note: During installation we may identify that a smart meter isn't compatible with the current metering set up at your property. If this is the case, we’ll reinstall your existing meter and get in touch when we’re able to offer you a suitable smart meter.Left is never right but I always am.0 -
