Weve got a 1st gen smart meter installed. I've read about from summer 2019 they will be migrated on DCC so you can switch suppliers and maintain smart functionality.
If I switch before this date, will i lose functionality forever, or just until it is migrated?

You will loose functionality but not forever (providing your SMETS1 can be upgraded - not all are)Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill0

The switch may be scheduled to start in the middle of 2019 but it's not a trivial task. There are reckoned to be in excess of 12 million SMETS1 meters out there and there's a defined process, which is quite complex to get the meters enrolled onto the DCC.
Not all meters have had the upgrade/enrollment process verified yet, most notably the Secure meters used by a lot of the smaller suppliers so they will be the last ones to be swapped over.
The supplier has to get up to speed and some meters will need to have a software upgrade as well so I wouldn't be holding my breath. I reckon you'll be lucky to get it done by the end of 2020. But that's just my opinion.Never under estimate the power of stupid people in large numbers0
