Hi,
what is currently the fastest (without talking about silly £££) external HDD - are there any 10,000 RPM models out there?
I'm needing a new one for Video editing and need SPEED!
Help appreciated!

Completely pointless because the USB2/Firewire port is the limiting factor.
Anyone who has a clue about video editing doesn't use an external drive other than to back up or move data from one location to another - certainly not for doing the editing.0 -
If you want an external drive that is faster than USB2 then you need to spend and go for a scsi drive
USB2 is 400 megabits /s newer scsi is 320megabytes /s bits are smaller than bytes again another play on numbers to make people think that usb2 is fast it is compared to usb1 but it doesnt compare to scsi.
But the cost is huge a large 15000rpm drive wil cost £300 decent 320 controler another £150-£300 external case for the drive will set you back £50-£100 and you need to buy the external cable and they used to cost a fortune aswell.
The downside is that unless the other pc that will use the drive, I asume you need to move the drve arround wanting external, will also need a scsi adaptor so even more expense.0 -
Editing is fine over a FW800 port. so there.
I think i'll just look for a 7200RPM - it'll be good enough.Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If you’re not sure why please read the forum rules or email the forum team if you’re still unsure - MSE ForumTeam0 -

You can get an external sata drive which connects via an external sata connection on the board/back of pc.0
