Can I ask for council tax reduction?

Options
My partner and kid will be moving abroad for an year. They may extend the stay after an year but not yet decided on the extension as of now.
Currently we are renting and after they move abroad, I will continue to stay in the UK but will move to a shared accommodation in 2-3 months.
Will there be a reduction in council tax for the current place for the 2-3 months that I am going to continue?
Any other such reduction that I can avail ?

Many thanks for any help here.

I think you are referring to the "single person discount" which is 25%. As your current rental would still be your partner's main residence, should she return to the UK, your council may argue that SPD would not be allowed. You should ask your council when your partner has actually moved abroad.
If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales

Your partner is leaving on (an initial) temporary basis and therefore for council tax purposes they will be regarded as still being resident until such point as the decision never to return to the property is made. This means no single person discount will be due.

Once you move to a new property and surrender the old one then your partners status will not matter after that point unless they return to live in your new address.
I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.
