SDP and Housing Benefit

Hi , I am not receiving SDP as my income from receiving IIDB cancels all Disability Premiums out on my CB ESA Support Group award. Though on my Housing Benefit award letter it has Applicable amounts and SDP is one of them. Just wondering if they take this off my rent or I'd be better off not having the SDP on my Housing Benefit award Applicable amount ? Also i'm considering moving to an area that has Universal credit for Housing Benefit and having SDP on my current HB award means I don't have to claim UC when I move.

You get the SDP because you are in receipt of daily living part of PIP, live alone and no one claims Carers Allowance for looking after you. The SDP is included in the calculation of your personal allowance when determining your Housing benefit entitlement. The personal allowance is the amount of income you are allowed to receive before deductions are made due to your other income when calculating your Housing Benefit. If the SDP was not included you would get less Housing benefit.

You are correct that if you move you should be able to make a new claim for Housing Benefit because you have the SDP included in your existing HB award but only if you will still be living alone (or living with someone else who also is in receipt of Daily Living part of PIP, equivalent DLA or AA) and no one claims Carers Allowance for looking after you. If you were moving to live with some one else who did not meet these conditions you would no longer qualify for SDP and would have to claim UC in order to get help with your rent. Your contribution based ESA and IIDB would not be affected.

Hi , thanks for the reply and it is good to know that I don't have to claim UC when I move , as I'll be living alone etc so criteria is Ok. Going off a little but it seems that many people who claim or are made to claim UC at moment and are disabled may lose out , on their Premiums , HB awards etc. Not sure but it seems when people are moved onto UC in , I think , what is called a ' Managed Migration to UC ' in coming years that all these Premiums etc will be protected.

Yes, under managed migration there will be transitional protection for people with the Severe disability Premium - details still to be confirmed.

If/when you move be prepared to insist to new local authority that you are entitled to claim Housing benefit. I recommend you make sure that you do have confirmation of a current Housing Benefit award including the SDP which you can produce if required.

Hi, i did call the relevent local authority , which is Full UC , just generally and almost immediately the lady asked if I was on an SDP. Thinking I wasn't I then looked at my HB award for 2019/20 and saw the inclusion of an SDP in my Applicable amount. I am hoping that if I move before 2020 to this area then this award letter will be enough to convince them , regardless of me not receiving SDP in my ESA because of my income from IIDB. I am on PIP Standard daily living and Enhanced mobility. I may go off on another subject slightly in my posts but maybe some of the text crops up in searches as has happened for me looking for advice on matters that may link. lots of people under pressure because mistakenly put on UC whilst being ' Entitled' ( not necessarily receiving cash ) for EDP , and also other Benefits.
