dishwasher door

We have a pre-existing 600mm gap in the kitchen where the previous owners had a dishwasher. Whilst a freestanding one would slot in beautifully, SWMBO has decreed she would like an integrated one.

I can get a door that matches well enough. My concern is width. Appliance is 598mm wide. Normally a 600mm door would fit but that then leaves an 18mm carcass visible on either side from neighbouring cupboards.

Appliance doors look to be 600mm. Would a custom made door of 635mm work?

If you can see 18mm of carcass each side they should be end panels which can be taken off.

If its a normal carcass, the doors would cover the existing 18mm carcass edges. So why arent the doors either side covering their respective units, which they should?

Id avoid getting a custom made kitchen door, i cant see it being cost effective.

Right of this empty space is a built-in undercounter fridge. Left side is an end panel behind which is a wall. There's a corner post and then a double cabinet at 90 degrees.

If I stick a 600mm door on the dishwasher, the end panels will be visible and may look a bit odd.

It would be more MSE to get a freestanding dishwasher, so I wouldn't have to worry about doors, plinths etc. But SWMBO wants an integrated dishwasher with the thought in mind of redoing the kitchen at some point in the next two or three years. She doesn't want to wait until then to get a dishwasher.

I fit kitchens for a living.

The end panels are supposed to come flush with the integrated door, once it is closed. So as you look at it, you would have a sandwich of a 600mm door between 2 18mm end panels. Trust me, this is quite normal. Alternatively, you will need to take the end panels out and put a filler piece of 36mm in one side.

A 600mm door actually comes up at around 595 to 597mm depending on the manufacturer which allows a gap so that the door doesn't bind on the adjacent end panels.

Except they don't. The end panels are flush with the carcasses. The doors all have profiled edges so a square end panel flush with the front of the door would look odd. The only way I could make an integrated dishwasher look natural is to have a wider door that covers both end panels.

If you are ripping the lot out that soon I would put up with looking odd or just take the hit on getting a new dishwasher at the time and move the old one to the utility for when you need extra washing capacity.

£250 will get a decent enough standalone.
