Nobody is the "best" anything. There is always something to learn and something they won't know.

The easiest way to get good at anything is to practice. You're not going to get good at learning Java by posting on forums, "how do I get good at Java", you need to study the theory, the language and then get on and do some coding, even if its only small programs that add a string of numbers up for example. You learn more that way.

If you have no other programming experience, then Java is probably not the best starting point. I'd choose a language and a programming environment that is easy/free to access.

Since your end-goal is Java you might want to start with the Client-side basic bundle of languages (HTML, CSS and Javascript)? You will probably need to use those languages (or at least be very aware of them) in developing with Java, anyway.

W3Schools is a great resource for studying programming, and it now covers a large number of the web-related languages, including Java. Best of all, it's free to use.

There's no actual spam there, though.

I would agree with that. As a first language, I would suggest Python.

If you have some programming experience then the study guides for the Oracle Java Certified Programmer qualification used to be pretty good. Some years ago I worked through the study guide for the Java 6 certification and that was a very good text.

Possibly. It's a subject that comes up quite often though.

HAL 9000 was capable of playing chess, so I'm sure this Bot is capable of learning Java ;)

Quite ... it seems you and I are the only ones to see it for what it is.

Does it? I can't remember the last query here in Techie Stuff about Java programming. I suggest you provide your definition of "often". Once a week I'll almost accept (and there haven't been anything like that many posts about Java) - anything less than that is not "often". ;)

There's only two ways to become the best Java programmer: become better than the current best, or become second-best and kill the best, taking their place.

If the best Java programmer is reading this thread, I recommend avoiding identifying yourself, as you may become a target for assassination by ankitdixit (who for all we know is already the second-best Java programmer).
