When does CTC change?

I'm claiming WTC & CTC for my 18 year old who is sitting his A-levels as I'm on a very low self-employed income. They will be starting university in September, but in the meantime they will not be working, except helping me out. I've had a letter to say that the child benefit will end on 1st September, but I have no idea about WTC/CTC. The website isn't very clear and all I seem to be able to find is info about when they turn 16, and then other websites are saying it can continue until 31st August if they're going to university.
I'm totally confused and really don't want to trying phoning them up as I get really confused on the phone.
Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

Creeping back in for accountability after falling off the wagon in 2016.
Need to get back to old style in modern ways, watching the pennies and getting stuff done!
