VW Dealer Negotiation - Cash Buyer

I have recently finished a job and have to hand back my company car. I am looking at purchasing an approved-used car from VW.

Having weighed up the options, the best option for me is to purchase it outright in cash (~£14k) and not a PCP deal. Having used PCP deals in the past, it is easy to negotiate on price but I have heard that (specifically VW dealers) never budge on price when paying cash.

Has anyone had any experiences buying from a VW dealer in cash recently? Is it true they won't budge on cash buyer prices? Does anyone have any tips & tricks for negotiations on car cash purchases?

Thanks in advance MSE! :money:

Buy on PCP withe associated deposit contributions etc and then pay off the finance as soon as you can. Best of both worlds

You should be able to negotiate on the price of the car, but they probably wont move much (unless its a car they've had in stock for quite a while). Concentrate on getting the right car at the right price, rather than getting a big discount percentage. I'd rather have £10 off a car at £10,000 than £1,000 off the same car elsewhere at £11,000.

Price around for the car and dont forget an approved used car can be serviced / have warranty work by any VW dealer, not just the supplying one.

Sometimes VW do incentives on their used car PCP deals, and as has been said you can simply take out the deal, then clear it a matter of days later and get the benefit of the incentive.

Nowadays, credit is king. When you go into the dealership you are on the assumption they wish to sell you a car, however they wish to sell you finance.

So as the above post get a good reduction for using the finance, then settle in the minimum time, there maybe a set up and settlement fees but this should still be less than the reduction obtained.

Try motorpoint instead. I've had my last 2 VW Golfs from them. Massive savings compared with main dealer prices..

Are you comparing like with like? Comparative mileage and service history? There are also certain other advantages to buying approved used.

Happy to be corrected on this.....

I seem to remember there was a specific way to cancel the finance to avoid admin charges, rather than doing an early settlement use your rights under the consumer credit act to withdraw from the agreement.

As some have said, do your homework and go armed. I've had discounts from certain car supermarkets that claim never to offer discounts by pointing out how much they have over priced their cars by and finding faults in said cars.

When I was looking for my Golf I bought a two year old one on PCP.

I got two years warranty instead of one. Two free services. Two year breakdown and two year mot insurance.

I then paid off the pcp after a week and only paid £27 interest.

If the car you are looking at is over 3 years you will only get a 1 month warranty with a car supermarket.

22 months ago I bought a year old Tiguan - price was better than other dealerships for similar vehicles and I needed it ASAP so I only got "free" gap insurance. So they dropped the vehicle value by the price of the insurance . ... and the salesman will have got his commission on selling me the insurance!

3 months ago bought another Tiguan - 6 months old and absolutely zero negotiation on price as wanted a very specific model and there was only the one within 100 miles radius of where I live. Not that bothered as it was a £9000 drop from list price new so still a great buy.
