Short term move and insurance

Morning,

I will be moving house in a few weeks and will be spending about 4-6 weeks in a friends spare bedroom before I get a place of my own.

I am curious what would be required for my car insurance and V5C certificate during this period?

Would it be expected that I change my address with my insurer and the DVLA upon my move to my friend house, and then again when I move into my own place? Or would 4-6 weeks be a reasonably temporary enough time period to wait until I move into my own place and do it then?

Many thanks

Look at it this way - if you have a car accident are you prepared to lie to your insurance company, risk fraud and have your insurance cancelled resulting in very expensive insurance, if you can get it, for the sake of an admin fee and change in insurance premium?

Are you happy to risk getting a ticket sent to your old address, have the parking company issue court proceedings and get a CCJ against you?

    I wouldn't chance it.

  • No of course, I agree that isn't worth the risk. I wasn't sure if there was an accepted period of overlap in the industry that I could take advantage of given it's a short period. Thanks for your reply

Best to just call your insurance company and tell them the situation, they may charge you admin fee for change of address, and they may charge you more for the area your moving to (they may not) - and they'll just note on the policy in the mean-time the address of your friends house. OR they may charge you extra for the area you'll temporarily be staying in AND the area you'll be moving to - but at least you'll have peace of mind if your car gets nicked while your at your friends because your insurer knows

Not gonna lie, if you're certain about time-frames, so you know you'll be moving in to your new address 4-6 weeks after staying with your friend, i PERSONALLY wouldn't bother changing my address with the DVLA and then changing it again.. They take so long to process V5C's anyway, by the time they've got to changing your current address to your friends one, you'll probably have the new V5 for a week or two before you have to change it again to your new address, thats just me though.

Look in your policy booklet and read about changes to your policy, changes could be free or you might have a certain amount of changes you can make for free.
