Hotels.com & Cancellation Fee

So I booked a stay with Hotels.com this week for this weekend (tomorrow for 3 nights). It had free cancellation and full refund if cancelled before 6pm on 6th June.
I found a better price and tried to cancel the booking on the 6th at approx 3:30pm, 2 hours 30 minutes before I would get charged to cancel.
I tried to cancel on the Hotels.com website and it would not let me, it just kept refreshing. I then contacted them via email (I could not call as I was working) explaining this and that I wanted to cancel.
I then called when I finished work (after the 6pm cut off time) and I explained the situation and they are refusing to refund me the full amount and insist I pay a 80% fee. I have also tried contacting the hotel and they refused also.
I really do not know what to do here, do I go through my bank? I am worried that my bank will side with Hotels.com. Any help would be appreciated!

On the bright side, at least you didn't book the new one BEFORE the hotels.com one was cancelled and so the amount lost is just the price difference...0

If you act quickly (today) and it's a genuine like for like room you can use their price guarantee. My experience is they really do honour it - I've had over 1000 pounds refunded on a hotel before.0

Just go with your first hotel.
Out of curiosity, why, after booking your hotel did you keep looking if it was all done and dusted.....
Seems daft to me....make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.0
