Electric meter removal
Hi, i have acquired my neighbours house and looking to disconnect the meter. i have have been advised by the local Electric distribution that the meters feed in the the house next door so disconnecting the meter will mean the house nextdoor will need a new supply.
I dont understand why cant they just remove the meter and connect the power back together so the neighbours dont lose connection. Any advise will be helpful. Plus they are looking to charge fir removing the meter.
Thanks in advance.
Muki

Can you explain why you want to do that? It sounds as if you're thinking about converting two properties into one property? But if that's the case, why do you still refer to "the neighbours"?0

Are you looking to do up the house and sell it on at a future date? Why do you need the meter to be disconnected? It will just be a hassle (and expensive) for the new owner to reconnect. If you're worried about gas and leccy being used in a vacant property, just turn off the mains at the fusebox and gas meter.0

I ve been a meter reader for years and visited quite a few properties over the years who have bought and combined a neighbours house , and one in a terraced street who combined three. In every instance the original meters have remained in situ along with the main fuse and consumer units.
I can see there is an added daily standing charge they have lost but if you select one of the cheapest suppliers at the moment such as Symbio with only a 10p a day s.c. then the loss is only £50 a year. The costs of combining them as one must come to at least £100 but one day you may want to sell both houses then there comes extra costs reinstating them0 -

1. They will not leave a house connected to the supply without a meter permanently. There is too much of a risk that someone will reconnect to the supply without a meter - free electricity. The supply must be capped off in the street. They cannot do this on a looped supply as it would also disconnect next door.
2. The electricity supply contract includes permission for them to run supply cables. If you take the house off supply then they need a wayleave to run cables to the neighbour.
3. It is no longer accepted to run a supply to a neighbour through someone else's house as the cable is considered inaccessible for repair and maintenance.
As you want this work done, rather than the electricity supplier (DNO) requiring to do it, the work, at least on your side, is chargeable.
It may also be the case that if there is a wayleave for the supply in your house deeds the full costs of all the work is chargeable to you.
