EON saying that smart metres are a legal requirement

I have a letter which contains a black box which says :

What happens if I don’t do anything about this letter?

By law we have to come and change your meter. This work is very important to us and to you, helping to keep you safe. If we don’t hear from you, will keep trying to contact you until your meter is changed.

I am with Bulb so why EON are contacting me I do not know.

The law says:

The government requires that smart meters are offered by energy suppliers to all small businesses and homes, but smart meters are not a legal requirement, therefore it's not compulsory to have a smart meter installed. However, having a smart meter at your premises is likely to become the norm in years to come.

Has anybody else received this letter - this is my 4th one. I don’t want to contact EON but I don’t want these letters either.
Nice to save.

Is the reason they are wanting to change the meter because it's old and needs changing, rather than as part of the smart meter programme?

    From the Which guide:
If you really don't want a smart meter, make this clear to your supplier and they may be able to set up a smart meter to work in 'dumb' mode, with all the communications switched off.

Be aware that if your energy company has contacted you to change your energy meter to a smart meter because your current meter needs replacing (ie it's too old), then you should get it replaced as it could be a safety hazard not to.

If you don't want to keep getting the letters, I can't see that you have any option other than to contact Eon. They're not going to stop if you don't tell them to.
All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.

Everything in that letter is true. New meters have to be fitted at some time, does nt matter if they are smart or dumb. That is how the industry has always worked, and it is mandatory..no argument about that..
If occupiers refuse to allow access to fit new meters then the supplier will disconnect on H and S grounds.
I know Eon have a large meter fitting team, possibly Bulb have contracted them to do the work. These small suppliers will not have the resources to run and maintain meter fitting teams so will use contractors.
When the Labour government was in power they made it a legal requirement to fit smart meters, they made them obligatory.
Ed Miliband was the Labour Energy Minister at the time and made them mandatory, like the rest of the world mostly did if they installed them.
You unleash a huge can of worms giving a, by and large, ignorant joe public the rights to refuse one.
Possibly Eon are looking forward to a new Labour government very shortly with the comment about future legalities

Hello m_i and already some good advice on here - thanks all.

This sounds like a statutory meter exchange (meter re-certification). These come about where the meter has reached the end of its guaranteed shelf life and are carried out by the Meter Operator for the area.

It's important this work is done to make sure your meter continues to be safe and accurate. It sounds like we're the Meter Operator for the area and are carrying out this work on behalf of your supplier, Bulb. As Houbara says, this work is mandatory.

You don't have to agree to have a smart meter. We'll offer smart meters if the property is eligible. As elsien says, you can turn down this offer. Please make this clear when you book an appointment and we'll fit an alternative.

I'd encourage you to contact us using the phone number in the letters we've sent. As well as being a legal requirement, we've also a duty of care to make sure our meters are safe and accurate. To achieve this, we'll continue to contact you until we're able to change the meter.

    Thanks m_i.

Unless I have missed something, there is nothing in your post content that supports the allegation in your thread title
i.e. "EON saying that smart metres are a legal requirement"

Unless there is anything in the correspondence you have received from E.On regarding why they are contacting you despite not being your supplier (e.e because E.On are the Meter Operator for the area and are carrying out this work on behalf of your supplier, Bulb, as suggested above) contact your existing supplier for clarification.

Where does it say in your letter that smart meters are a legal requirement?

    Dear Hasbeen

The original poster received a letter which started off by saying :

"By law we have to come and change your meter." So that's where it says that. And you have copied the message in its entirety!

It is NOT a legal requirement.

In fact, my new neighbour has just had the smart meter removed from her property as she does not feel that they are safe.

Nobody can force you to have a smart meter if you do not want to have one.

And that is a fact of life if you want to continue receiving energy via pipes and cables. It s an industry standard requirement to change meters when they have reached a certain point in the meters life.
.As already posted several times on here the meter can be a smart OR dumb meter, but the OP has to accept one type..or get disconnected..Their choice

How much did it cost her ? Its not normal practice for suppliers to be wasting money on the silly whim of someone with no idea about smart meters. They would just agree to make it a dumb meter, remotely. or by removing the SIM card or Hub and .so ending the designation of it being a smart meter.
Any electric or gas meter, smart or dumb , can be a danger if its not installed correctly

They certainly can, most of the world have made them mandatory, including ROI.
.Wait till Jeremy Corbyn gets in Power..They will soon change this nonsense..The Tories gained power and for some crazy reason decided to make the full roll out impractical when they gave people the choice to refuse.
.Ludicrous idea which has backfired despite all the wasted money of daft TV advertising..More money wasted on the roll out
